Clogged drains are a very common problem, especially in the kitchen. We see these types of problems every day at Plumbers Barbican. Foodstuffs can easily get into and down the plughole and gather, eventually causing an inconvenient blockage. In many instances, a blocked kitchen sink drain can be quickly and easily fixed.
If you notice your drain is running slowly, it’s best to address the problem sooner rather than later to avoid further problems down the line. If you find your kitchen drain is blocked, try these simple, money saving DIY fixes to clear your kitchen sink drain.
First, try using a plunger to create pressure to dislodge the blockage. Often that is sufficient to clear the drain. If that doesn’t work, the blockage may be in the U Bend. This is one of the most common places for a blockage to occur. The U Bend is a portion of the pipe under the sink which is shaped like a U. Because of its shape, it’s easy for debris to get trapped in the base of the U Bend.
To remove the U Bend, you’ll need the following: a bucket, screwdriver, waterproof tape and a towel or rag. The U Bend has 2 sets of threads, one in front and one in back. Make sure your bucket is underneath the sink to catch any water and unscrew the front most threads. Then unscrew the back and remove the U Bend. Have a look; is there anything in there? If there is, use your screwdriver to remove it and then replace the U Bend.
